Born in 1973 in Meerut, Kailash grew up listening to folk music sung by his father, a Kashmiri Pandit priest and singer. He left home young to pursue music, struggled through several jobs in Delhi, and moved to Mumbai in 2001 to find work as a singer.

His break came with Allah Ke Bande from the film Waisa Bhi Hota Hai Part II (2003), which became a nationwide hit. He formed the band Kailasa with the Mumbai-based musicians Naresh and Paresh Kamath, and their albums Kailasa, Jhoomo Re and Chaandan Mein produced hits such as Teri Deewani and Saiyyan.
