Early life and background
Vishal grew up in Mumbai and fronted the rock band Pentagram from the 1990s, one of the pioneers of the Indian independent music scene.

As Vishal–Shekhar, he and Shekhar Ravjiani broke through with Jhankaar Beats and went on to compose for Om Shanti Om, Dostana, I Hate Luv Storys, Student of the Year, Chennai Express, Bang Bang, War and Pathaan. As a singer he has delivered songs such as Malhari (Bajirao Mastani) and many Vishal–Shekhar numbers.
He has been a judge on Indian Idol and other music shows, and the duo performs large live concerts.
