About Sunil Gavaskar
Sunil Gavaskar, “Sunny” to generations of fans and “the Little Master” to cricket writers, is one of the greatest opening batsmen in the history of the game. Born in Mumbai in 1949, he played for India from 1971 to 1987 and became the first batsman in the world to score 10,000 Test runs. Today he is one of cricket’s most recognised voices as a commentator, and his name carries authority across every generation of Indian fans.
Career highlights
Sunil was celebrated for his technique against fast bowling, averaging more than 65 against the powerful West Indies sides of his era, at a time when batsmen often faced them without helmets. He captained India and, as a member of the team, was part of the historic 1983 World Cup win. As captain he led India to the 1984 Asia Cup title, and he was part of the side that won the 1985 World Championship of Cricket.
He received the Arjuna Award and the Padma Bhushan, was inducted into the ICC Cricket Hall of Fame in 2009 and received the C. K. Nayudu Lifetime Achievement Award in 2012. He has also served as Sheriff of Mumbai. The Border–Gavaskar Trophy, contested between India and Australia, carries his name.
