About Sourav Ganguly
Sourav Ganguly, fondly called “Dada” and the “Maharaja of Indian cricket”, is one of the most influential figures the sport in India has known. Born in Kolkata in 1972, he was an elegant left-handed batsman and a captain who changed the attitude of Indian cricket, teaching a young side to compete aggressively and win abroad. He later went on to lead the sport as an administrator, serving as president of the Board of Control for Cricket in India from 2019.
Career highlights
Sourav scored 11,363 runs in one-day internationals and was only the third batsman in the world to pass 10,000 ODI runs, after Sachin Tendulkar and Inzamam-ul-Haq. His 183 against Sri Lanka at the 1999 World Cup remains the highest score by an Indian batter at a World Cup. Wisden ranked him the sixth-greatest ODI batsman of all time in 2002.
As captain he led India to victory in the 2002 ICC Champions Trophy and to the finals of the 2000 Champions Trophy, the 2003 World Cup and the 2004 Asia Cup. He also backed a generation of young players who went on to define Indian cricket. He retired from international cricket in 2008 and from all cricket in 2012, and he received the Padma Shri in 2004.
