About Sandeep Patil
Sandeep Patil is a member of India’s 1983 World Cup-winning team and one of the most colourful figures in Indian cricket. Born in Mumbai in 1956 and raised in the Shivaji Park area, the son of a former first-class cricketer and national-level badminton player, he was a hard-hitting middle-order batter famous for fearless strokeplay. He later became a coach, a national selection chief and director of the National Cricket Academy.

Sandeep studied at Balmohan Vidyamandir and Ramnarain Ruia College and was coached at Shivaji Park. As a player he was known for attacking fast bowlers, including a famous assault on England’s Bob Willis in 1982, when he hit six fours in an over. He was part of the 1983 World Cup win and the 1984 Asia Cup triumph.
As a coach he achieved one of cricket’s great upsets by guiding Kenya to the semi-finals of the 2003 World Cup. He later served as director of the National Cricket Academy and as chairman of the BCCI senior selection committee. He has also worked as a commentator and in films.
