About Mithali Raj
Mithali Raj is one of the greatest cricketers the women’s game has ever produced and the player most responsible for building the profile of women’s cricket in India. Born in Jodhpur in 1982 and raised in Hyderabad, she trained in Bharatanatyam as a child before cricket took over. She captained India from 2004 to 2022 and retired as the highest run-scorer in women’s international cricket.

Mithali is the only woman to score more than 7,000 runs in women’s ODIs, holds the record for the most half-centuries in the format and was the first player to score seven consecutive ODI fifties. In 2019 she became the first woman to play 200 ODIs. She was also the first Indian, man or woman, to reach 2,000 T20I runs.
She captained India in two ICC Women’s World Cup finals, in 2005 and 2017. The 2017 campaign in England captured national attention and is widely credited with transforming interest in women’s cricket in India. Her honours include the Arjuna Award, the Padma Shri, the Major Dhyan Chand Khel Ratna and the Wisden Leading Woman Cricketer in the World award for 2017. Her life story was also told in the biopic Shabaash Mithu.
