About Zaheer Khan
Zaheer Khan is one of India’s greatest fast bowlers and the leader of the pace attack that won the 2011 Cricket World Cup. Born in 1978 in Shrirampur, Maharashtra, he was a left-arm fast-medium bowler famous for swing in both directions and outstanding reverse swing with the old ball. He played for India in all formats from 2000 to 2014 and remains a respected voice in the game.
Career highlights
Zaheer began his domestic career with Baroda and soon became India’s spearhead. He was part of the team that shared the 2002 ICC Champions Trophy and played a central role in the 2011 World Cup win, taking 21 wickets in nine matches as joint-leading wicket-taker of the tournament.
He is India’s second-most successful Test pace bowler alongside Ishant Sharma, behind only Kapil Dev, and he dismissed some of the world’s best left-handed batsmen, including Graeme Smith, Kumar Sangakkara, Sanath Jayasuriya and Matthew Hayden, more than ten times each. He received the Arjuna Award in 2011. After retiring, he has worked as a commentator and in coaching and mentoring roles in the IPL.
What audiences love about Zaheer
Fans remember Zaheer as a thinking bowler who outwitted batsmen with skill rather than raw pace, and as a mentor to younger fast bowlers. His calm, friendly personality and his role in the 2011 triumph have made him one of the most respected figures in Indian cricket.
Many current Indian pace bowlers credit him with sharing the secrets of swing and reverse swing, and his influence on the next generation is a big part of his legacy.
His comeback stories also inspire fans: after injuries and spells out of the team, he repeatedly returned stronger, including an outstanding Test series in England in 2007 that helped India win there for the first time in 21 years.
