Early life and background
Born in 1955 into a Tamil family of Carnatic musicians, Hariharan trained in Carnatic and Hindustani music and built a reputation as a ghazal singer before film playback.
Career highlights
He sang hundreds of film songs in Tamil and Hindi, many for A. R. Rahman, including Tu Hi Re (Bombay) and Roja Jaaneman. His ghazal albums made him one of the leading names in the genre, and with Lesle Lewis he formed Colonial Cousins, pioneers of Indian fusion pop.
