Early life and background
Born in Mumbai into a Tamil family, Shankar trained in Carnatic and Hindustani music and studied engineering, working as a software engineer before turning to music full-time.
Career highlights
His album Breathless (1998) became a pop sensation. As part of Shankar–Ehsaan–Loy he composed the music for Dil Chahta Hai, Kal Ho Naa Ho, Bunty Aur Babli, Taare Zameen Par, Rock On!!, Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara and many other films. He has sung in many Indian languages and won National Film Awards for his singing.
With the fusion group Shakti he won the Grammy for Best Global Music Album in 2024 for This Moment. He also runs an online music academy.
