About Malini Awasthi
Malini Awasthi is one of India’s most celebrated folk singers, often called the “Folk Queen of India”. Born in Kannauj, Uttar Pradesh, into a family of doctors, she began learning music at the age of five and went on to become a disciple of the legendary Padma Vibhushan Vidushi Girija Devi of the Benares gharana. Her voice carries the folk traditions of Uttar Pradesh and Bihar to audiences across India and the world.
Career highlights
Classically trained, Malini is equally at home in Hindustani forms such as dadra, thumri, kajri and chaiti, and she also performs ghazals and Sufi music. She sings fluently in Awadhi, Bhojpuri, Bundeli and Braj, keeping regional song traditions alive for new generations through concerts, television and recordings.
In recognition of her decades of service to Indian music, the Government of India awarded her the Padma Shri in 2016. She has also contributed to academic life, working as a visiting professor at the Centre for Media Studies at Jawaharlal Nehru University and later as a Professor of Practice at Chaudhary Charan Singh University, Meerut.
